Aston Martin Cognizant – News, Biography & 2021 F1 Race Results

Aston Martin Cognizant

Backstory

Aston Martin has returned to Formula 1 61 years after its disastrous first attempt in the premier class of motorsport in the late 1950s.

The team in its current form, led by Lawrence Stroll, can trace its history back to 1991. Jordan, Midland, Spyker, Force India and Racing Point have all stood in front of the luxury automaker at its Silverstone facility.

Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Damon Hill, Giancarlo Fisichella and Sergio Perez are just a handful of the quality drivers who have walked through the doors of the factory. Team is projected onto the grid.

With 5 wins and 29 podiums since Jordan was founded, Aston Martin hopes to improve on an already established legacy.

Aston Martins F1 battles – 1959-1960

In the 1950s, Aston Martin Lagonda was a leading name in endurance racing. Under the direction of Sir David Brown, he produced some exceptional sports cars in the late 1940s and 1950s to compete in classic endurance races.

The brand claimed victory at the Spa 24 Hours in 1948 and challenged the Le Mans 24 Hours during the 1950s only to be beaten by Ferrari, Mercedes and the mighty D-Type Jaguar.

The competitiveness shown in the great French race, however, led Brown to develop the manufacturer’s first Formula 1 car – the DBR4 – in addition to the DBR1 sports car for his endurance endeavors.

Brown knew that because of the enormous scarcity of resources, he could not compete head-to-toe with the Maseratis and Ferraris of the world.

Unfortunately, this turned out not to be the case and instead became doom. Development of the DBR4 began in 1957, but the car didn’t appear on a Formula 1 grid until 1959 as the focus shifted to the DBR1.

While the sports car finally won the glory of Le Mans this season through Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby, with teammates Paul Frere and Maurice Trintignant finishing second home, the F1 car was a flop.

Basically, the team in the DBR4 had built a good car. Salvadori drove it to second place on its debut at a non-championship event at Silverstone. But when it competed at a recognized Grand Prix, the front engine design was outdated and relatively uncompetitive.

Two sixth places for Salvadori were the best the team could muster in just four starts, while the DBR5 built for 1960 – a further development of the DBR4 – only competed once, with Trintignant finishing 11th. The F1 project was discontinued immediately.

Jordan – 1991-2004

With a fantastic record in junior formulas, Irishman Eddie Jordan led his team into F1 for the 1991 season with Andrea de Cesaris and Bertrand Gachot.

It was a promising first season that saw the team finish fifth in the championship, with Italian de Cesaris finishing fourth in Canada and Mexico. The team made his F1 debut at the Belgian Grand Prix to Michael Schumacher after Gachot was jailed for an argument with a taxi driver.

The team couldn’t keep the Germans for the rest of the season despite a legal battle with Benetton, so both Roberto Moreno and Alessandro Zanardi stepped in towards the end of the season.

A move to Yamaha engines in 1992 brought little success for the team as only a single point was scored thanks to Stefano Modena, while Barrichello and Eddie Irvine together scored the only three points the team would get in 1993 in a year of six riders the car.

Irvine would be banned from the first race of the 1994 season to exclude him from the following three races, with Aguri Suzuki and de Cesaris taking his place.

In the second race of the season, Barrichello almost lost his life on the darkest weekend in Formula 1. Before Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna died in their falls in Imola, the Brazilian had a serious fall during training and was eliminated from the race after rapid medical help ensured his safety.

Barrichello would return stronger and take Jordan’s very first pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix before retiring in the race.

At the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix, Barrichello and Irvine would take a two-three place for Jordan’s first F1 podium. With sixth place in the championship, the team was able to consolidate itself as an established midfielder.

It should be two more seasons before the podium places returned, thanks to Ralf Schumacher and Giancarlo Fisichella, who shared three top 3 placings in 1997. Fisichella was replaced in 1998 by former world champion Damon Hill, who took the first of Jordan’s victories in the chaotic Belgian Grand Prix with his German teammate second.

In 1999, Hill joined Heinz-Harold Frentzen, who should achieve two victories in an outstanding season. Third place in the constructors’ championship was a great reward for the team’s steps against the powerhouses McLaren-Mercedes and Ferrari.

Fortune would never be that strong for the team, and despite a final fairy tale win for the returning Fisichella at the 2003 Brazilian Grand Prix, Jordan’s Formula 1 remained as a residue.

The podium Thiago Monteiro took on the team’s last season was bittersweet as it came during the famous six-car duel in Indianapolis. Jordan was sold at the end of the season.

Midland and Spyker – 2006-2007

Midland Group took ownership prior to 2005 but changed the team’s name to Midland F1 for 2006. Monteiro was preserved alongside Christijan Albers. The team ended the season pointless with a best result of nine in the tiring Hungarian Grand Prix.

Midland would sell to Dutch automaker Spyker in 2007 as Adrian Sutil replaced Monteiro on the team. A difficult start to the season was made more difficult by the forced release of Albers in the middle of the season. Markus Winkelhock led sensationally during the deluge at the 2007 European Grand Prix before he had to retire in his first and only F1 race.

Sutil would score a single point before the team was sold to Vijay Mallya to become Force India.

Force India – 2008-2018

One of F1’s big underdog stories is how Force India consistently beat well over its weight to be considered a strong midfield team despite significantly fewer resources compared to competing teams.

The team scored no points in their debut season despite a heartbreaking Sutil after being knocked out fourth in Monaco and continuing to fight fights in 2009 before finishing second for the renamed team’s first podium.

From 2010, the team established itself as a midfielder, with Nico Hülkenberg running at the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix shortly before victory before coming into contact with Lewis Hamilton.

The podiums would return during the turbo hybrid era as Force India’s partnership with Mercedes would pay off. In fact, Sergio Perez would take all five other podiums for the team between 2014 and 2018 as the team rose to become the fourth best team in F1.

However, financial difficulties led the team to administration and expulsion from the championship when a consortium backed by Lawrence Stroll purchased the assets of Force India and renamed it Racing Point mid-season.

Racing Point and Aston Martin – 2018-present

Racing Point Force India started from scratch in the middle of the 2018 season, accumulating enough points to finish seventh in the constructors’ championship before becoming Racing Point F1 in 2019.

Lance Stroll replaced Esteban Ocon on the team to partner with Perez as the team aimed to build on the foundations left by his previous form. Stroll Sr. began investing in the infrastructure around the Silverstone base, but the results were not coming quickly. A single fourth place for Stroll in Germany would be the best result, because the team occupies seventh place in the overall standings.

A technical connection with Mercedes would lead to breathtaking speed in 2020. Four podiums shared by Perez and Stroll put the team straight into the battle for third place in the standings, though a point deduction for a design violation related to brake ducts would ultimately benefit McLaren ahead of them.

Perez would take a jaw-dropping victory at the Sakhir Grand Prix and would fight back last after contact on the first lap to give him the perfect farewell to the team he would be leaving at the end of the season. It has been announced that the team will be renamed again before 2021 with the introduction of Aston Martin to the team.

Sebastian Vettel has been announced as Stroll’s teammate in the hopes that Aston Martin can be pushed to the top.
