The French team overtook their two rivals and moved up to fifth place in the constructors’ championship after a sensational Hungarian GP won by Alonso’s team-mate Esteban Ocon. The Spaniard finished fourth in the race.
Alpine has since held its own in fifth place, despite Alonso believing the A521 isn’t as competitive as the AlphaTauri and Aston Martin.
But Alonso says the team’s ability to perform on Sundays and avoid mistakes made Alpine a stronger package.
“I think we are good. We are good in every way,” said Alonso. “As I said, we deliver the job on Sundays.
“We may not have the car to compete with AlphaTauri or Aston Martin in pure performance, but we have the team to compete” [with] Sundays and to collect points.
“So we will try to fight for fifth place in the constructors’ championship until the end if possible. In this respect, I think that we are okay in the racing team. “
He added: “That’s our strength as a team, you know, scoring points every Sunday.
“We probably don’t have the fastest car in midfield, but we have probably the best team in midfield, so we were able to collect points every Sunday.”

The Spaniard finished eighth in the Italian GP, two places ahead of Ocon, a race in which Alonso expected Alpine to be weak compared to its main rivals.
“I think there will be ups and downs for everyone,” he said of the season’s memory. “We saw in this triple header that we are up and down in terms of competitiveness and the starting grid.
“In Spa we were okay on dry land. When it was wet we weren’t okay. In Zandvoort we were okay all weekend. We’re not here. So I think it’s the route dependency.
“So I’m not sure what it’s going to be like in Russia, Turkey and Austin. I think it will be better.
“I will say that Monza was already one of the worst on the calendar [for Alpine]. We knew that. “
