Alonso got off to a spectacular start in the very first F1 sprint race, going from 11th to fifth on the first lap.
The Spaniard dropped to seventh when the faster McLarens overtook him in the 17-lap sprint.
The two-time champion did not have a similarly good start in the Grand Prix on Sunday, but prevailed against Sebastian Vettel in the first laps before defending against Lance Stroll’s second Aston Martin for the duration of the race.
After Sprint Qualifying at Silverstone, Ricciardo praised Alonso for his impressive racing skills, saying it shows that age doesn’t matter as the Alpine driver turns 40 next week.
“I actually congratulate him on making it pretty exciting. His start was phenomenal and kept us busy. I think it’s cool to see … the question always arises – I think with every sport – does age matter?

“I think his Racecraft was probably the best on the grid this year, at least at times. It’s cool to see that he still has a real passion and drive for it and that you can keep it at a very high level. “
Alonso himself described his start in the sprint as one of the best of his career.
“Yeah, I think the first lap was one of the best,” added Alonso. “I know that there are a lot of first laps beforehand, they are understood how good … especially in the Renault days with very good starts. But this one, not just in Turn 1, it was Turn 3, Turn 4, 6, 9, it was a more complete lap. “
