The 2022 F1 season has just a single rookie driver on the grid compared to the previous three seasons. However, last season the grid said goodbye to an icon in Kimi Raikkonen when he retired after the final race in Abu Dhabi.
The F1 grid has always been fluid on this front with drivers coming and going often. This season, however, we may see three drivers race for the last time as they head towards the twilight of their careers. In this article, we take a look at the drivers who could be in F1 for the last time this season.
Drivers who could retire from F1 at the end of the season
#1 Fernando Alonso
Picking Fernando Alonso as one of the drivers who could retire from F1 is not a blow to the driver. It rather reflects the situation Alonso is in at Alpine. At 40, Alonso knows he doesn’t have too many years left and has gambled on a two-year deal with Alpine in 2020 to keep that in mind.
However, Alpine as a team hasn’t shown too many positive signs when it comes to the prospects of challenging for the title any time soon. Fernando Alonso won’t stay in if the 2022 Alpine challenger is able to only compete in midfield. He may find himself losing interest again and this time retiring from the sport for good.
#2 Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel’s contract expires at the end of the 2022 F1 season. He had a competitive first season with Aston Martin and also managed to secure a podium in Baku. However, when you compare it to the level of performance we are all used to seeing Sebastian Vettel, it’s fair to say he wasn’t as good as expected.
With better prospects like Pierre Gasly also available for the 2022 season, there’s a chance Aston Martin’s management is looking to fresher blood. It could see Vettel say goodbye to the game.
#3 Lewis Hamilton

Hamilton, on the other hand, at the age of 37 with seven multiple titles won’t accept the idea of playing Russell in a supporting role. He could retire from the sport at the end of 2022 as the most successful driver in the history of Formula 1.
