Zhou Guanyu assesses Alfa Romeo’s fight with Aston Martin for P6 in Constructors’ standings

Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu has given his thoughts on the team’s fight with Aston Martin for sixth place in the Constructors’ standings with four races left to go.

Alfa started this season wonderfully well but in the second half of the campaign we have seen them struggling for pace, with the likes of Alpine and McLaren overhauling them in the standings and leaving them behind.

They’re sat in P6 as it stands, then, but Aston Martin are showing some great form at the moment and, after appearing to jump AlphaTauri and Haas in the standings and move away from them, the team in British Racing Green now has Alfa in its sights.

There’s just seven points between the two teams in the table at the moment, then, as we head into the United States Grand Prix weekend, but Zhou believes that recent upgrades brought in in Japan and here in Austin could help them fend off the challenge of the Astons.

“I think in terms of the speed we’re always there in qualifying,” Zhou said to Give Me Sport when assessing the fight.

“Let’s say in terms of race pace, they probably were a little bit better recently because we were quite, let’s say, not as quick to bring in new parts.

“Here we have a bit more of the upgrade. So yeah, I see no reason why we can’t keep them behind.

“It’s so difficult to predict this season, some races we’ll be fine, some races we’ll be struggling but we’re to get the best out of ourselves. That’s definitely one of the biggest targets for the remaining races.”

Whilst the fight out in front could be completely done and dusted this weekend in terms of Red Bull winning the Constructors’ standings, there’s still plenty to be won and lost further down the table.

Both Alfa and Aston have a great chance of securing P6 this year and it’s going to be fascinating watching them battle it out in the closing stages of the season.

Zhou appears hopeful that the upgrades Alfa have managed to bring to their car of late could help them swing the momentum back in their favour, but ultimately the proof will be in the lap times over the final four race weekends.
