Who is confirmed for next season’s grid?

The F1 2023 grid is still not fully decided, with multiple drivers set to come to the end of their current contracts at the end of the year – and several people could swap teams or leave Formula 1 entirely.

‘Silly season’ is one of the key features of the Formula 1 calendar, with the annual ‘musical chairs’ of the drivers filling seats inevitably leaving some without a drive, while securing moves up and down the grid for others.

The top three teams in the Constructors’ Championship, Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes, all have settled driver line-ups heading into the next season, while the rest of the grid is something of a lottery as it stands.

Here’s the current state of play among the possible 2023 grid:

Mercedes F1 2023 drivers

The Mercedes driver line-up of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will be in place again for another season in 2023 after first joining forces ahead of the 2022 campaign.

With Russell set to be part of the Mercedes furniture for many years to come, all eyes will once again be on Hamilton and whether he will extend his stay with the Silver Arrows beyond 2023…or decide to bring his legendary career to an end and pursue other interests.

Red Bull F1 2023 drivers

Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have struck up something of a partnership at Red Bull, with the Mexican keeping pace with his team-mate in a way Pierre Gasly and Alex Albon could not, first earning a renewal for 2022 before signing fresh terms until the end of 2024.

Perez staying at Red Bull has shut a few doors on others looking to partner Verstappen at the head of the field, but it is a settled partnership next season for the Milton Keynes squad.

Ferrari F1 2023 drivers

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz formed Ferrari’s youngest ever driver line-up when they linked up for the first time in 2021. Leclerc’s future was already sorted on a long-term basis, with Sainz coming in on an initial two-year deal.

Sainz beat his team-mate in the points standings last year, and his strong performances have earned him two more years with the Scuderia, meaning both drivers’ contracts will run out at the same time.

McLaren F1 2023 drivers

Daniel Ricciardo moved to McLaren with high hopes of leading the team forward, but he has found himself up against a formidable opponent in the team in Lando Norris, whose reputation has grown exponentially in the past two years.

Norris has since earned himself a four-year deal with McLaren that reportedly put him in the top three earners in Formula 1, such has been his rise. Ricciardo is set to remain with the team next year.

Alpine F1 2023 drivers

Esteban Ocon earned himself a multi-year extension with Alpine last year after an excellent start to life alongside the returning Fernando Alonso, taking his first race victory in the process.

Two-time World Champion Alonso looks as almost as ever, but his deal is expiring and with Formula 2 champion and Alpine junior Oscar Piastri waiting in the wings, the team has a decision to make – although Alonso has made it clear he wants to continue in Formula 1. Talks are expected after the summer break.

Esteban Ocon: Signed a three-year contract extension to take him through to 2024.

Aston Martin F1 2023 drivers

Both Aston Martin drivers are out of contract at the end of the year, but both Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll could well stay with the team for the 2023 season.

Vettel’s ‘one-plus-one’ contract comes to an end and, with the four-time World Champion only interested in race victories, his future within the sport is up in the air – although the team want to keep his services on a long -term base. Stroll’s seat looks secure given his father owns the team, but he’s yet to be confirmed for 2023 at the time of writing.

Alfa Romeo F1 2023 drivers

Valtteri Bottas left Mercedes when George Russell was brought in as his replacement alongside Lewis Hamilton, moving to Alfa Romeo on the first multi-year contract of his career, giving the 10-time race winner the security he has craved in Formula 1.

Who his team-mate would be up for debate, before the team opted for Zhou Guanyu for 2022. While his contract is for 2022 alone, he has improved after a slow start and is in contention to retain his drive, though he will likely face competition from the likes of Mick Schumacher and Théo Pourchaire for that seat.

Valtteri Bottas: Signed on a deal “for 2022 and beyond”, thought to run until 2024.

AlphaTauri F1 2023 drivers

The driver situation at AlphaTauri is an interesting one. Pierre Gasly had already been signed to the Red Bull program until the end of 2023, but rumors were so rife that his future may lay elsewhere, such have been the strength of his performances, that the team was forced to re-affirm his contract would be honoured.

Yuki Tsunoda was awarded a second season alongside Gasly, admitting his own surprise that he was retained after a tough rookie year. He’ll face competition from Red Bull junior Liam Lawson and potentially Alex Albon for his seat in 2023.

Williams F1 2023 drivers

Neither piece of the driver line-up at Williams for 2023 is yet to fall into place, and every possibility remains open – be it one new driver, two new drivers, or retaining their current pairing.

Nicholas Latifi has largely played second fiddle to Alex Albon with the team this year, and the Canadian’s future is not secure within the team. Albon’s future lies first with Red Bull, who retain an option to recall him to their stable for 2023, but should he be released to join Williams full-time, he is likely to do so.

Mercedes reserve Nyck de Vries and Alpine’s Oscar Piastri have both been named as possible Williams drivers for 2023, so their next line-up is the most open of all the teams as it stands.

Haas F1 2023 drivers

Kevin Magnussen was drafted back into Formula 1 after the abrupt sacking of Nikita Mazepin before the start of the season, and he has slotted seamlessly back into the sport, and his future is secure beyond the end of the year.

Mick Schumacher, a Ferrari junior driver, comes to the end of his Haas deal at the end of 2022, and is looking to prove he is worthy of a contract extension with Haas or a move to another team, with the door being shut to his senior team for the next two seasons at least.
