Who builds extreme e-cars while Rosberg's team is taking them for the title?

Nico Rosberg’s team became the first Extreme E champion in the season finale, leaving Lewis Hamilton behind, but who actually makes the cars that are used in Extreme E? Are they all the same

It is not the first time that Nico Rosberg has overtaken Lewis Hamilton in a final race in the championship decision.

Their epic rivalry as Mercedes Formula 1 teammates ended in 2016 when Rosberg took Hamilton’s crown in the showdown in Abu Dhabi.

The German promptly retired, which meant that Hamilton could never take his crown back from his team-mate – the ultimate one-upmanship, you could say.

Five years later, in any case, in the first Extreme E championship, the two fought head-to-head again – as team owners.

Rosberg X Racing and X44 competed against each other, and fellow world champion Jenson Button also played with his own team.

Who builds extreme electric cars?

Extreme E is a cousin of the Formula E road racing series – both founded by Alejandro Agag.

The series was launched in 2021 to raise awareness of the changing nature of the environment through races in locations affected by climate change.

During the opening season, events took place on glaciers, in deserts and by the sea.

The machinery used in Extreme E is spec.

This means that all cars are the same in their specifications, championships like Formula 2 and FE are also spec series.

One company develops, manufactures and builds extreme electric cars – Spark Racing Technologies.

The same company based in France is also responsible for building the cars used in FE.

It was founded by Frederic Vassuer – the current team boss of the Alfa Romeo F1 team.

While SRT makes the Extreme E-Car, it doesn’t produce the battery that is used in the machines.

That comes from Williams Advanced Engineering – an offshoot of the Williams F1 team founded by the late Sir Frank Williams.

How did Rosberg’s team win?

Both Rosberg’s and Hamilton’s teams ended the season with 155 points.

However, RXR riders Johan Kristofferson and Molly Taylor achieved three wins – Saudi Arabia (desert), Senegal (ocean) and Italy (island).

This compared to just one in the Jurassic X-Prix Final for Sebastien Loeb and Cristina Gutierrez in Hamilton’s car.

At least safety car restarts or protests weren’t important for Hamilton …
