Kimi Raikkonen had a solid start to his weekend in Baku. The Alfa Romeo man was the eleventh fastest driver on the track. It wasn’t that the ‘Iceman’ didn’t have its fair share of problems on Friday, however. The Finn complained on the radio that his car’s battery was completely discharged before the end of the lap.

On team radio he could be heard talking to his technician: “Something is wrong with the settings. I drain my battery completely before the start / finish line. Why is it completely empty?

“Where is the problem? Somewhere in the settings? They check and tell me what the problem may be. How hard can it be? Is there anything we can do 1 lap? There was this problem with the car on the first lap as well. Nobody noticed. “

Despite all the murmuring, Kimi can rate the first free practice session as an unqualified success. For a long time it looked like he would finish the session in the top 10, but a delayed attack by Alonso denied him the chance. He hopes this will not be the case on Sunday.

Despite the strict regulations, Alfa Romeo has made a considerable leap in performance as a team. They have grown from a wooden spoon contender alongside Haas and Williams to a team in the lower midfield. Even so, they only managed 1 point this season thanks to Antonio Giovinazzi.

The 2007 world champion will hope to be able to make a contribution to his team in Baku as well. Kimi’s last F1 top 10 result came 10 races ago, at the 2020 Emilia Romagna GP. He hopes to correct this statistic by the end of this weekend.

Raikkonen has achieved some success in this place. He finished 2019 with Alfa Romeo P10 when F1 visited these coasts. He also managed to finish 2018 in his final season at Ferrari P2.

He will draw much hope from this fact. But it’s easier said than done to score points here. The long straights don’t necessarily help a team that doesn’t have brilliant pace. Nonetheless, this track is known to produce some interesting results. So it remains to be seen whether Raikkonen can end his point drought.
