Valtteri Bottas addresses idea of IndyCar switch

Valtteri Bottas has suggested he’d be open to switching to IndyCar once his time in Formula 1 comes to an end.

The Finn has had a positive enough season at Alfa Romeowith the team starting the year in really fine fashion.

Form has tailed off considerably in the second half of the campaign but they are hoping they can hold onto P6 in the Constructors’ standings in the final three races of the year, though that is going to be tough with Aston Martin now just a point behind and seemingly running on rails at the moment.

Even so, there’s a fair deal of optimism around the team for the future with them looking to kick on again in 2023 and, a little further down the line, become an Audi works team in 2026, which certainly should make for fascinating viewing.

Indeed, with the financial clout Audi can bring and the motorsport expertise they have, you wouldn’t put it past them becoming one of the leading lights on the grid in time, though it will obviously be difficult given the level of talent the other established top teams already have.

Bottas will surely want to stick around for that, though, and certainly has time on his side if he so wishes, and provided that Audi obviously want to keep him around.

Leaving F1 does not appear high on his agenda for the moment, then, though he admitted when he does leave the grid that IndyCar might well be something he considers moving to.

Speaking to the Kevin Clark podcast at the United States Grand Prix, the Finn said:

“Maybe I’ll be racing in the US [in the future.] IndyCar is quite interesting, the tracks are nice and the racing seems really real. It’s been gaining popularity, at least in Europe, so let’s see.”

For now, though, Bottas remains firmly intent on driving Alfa up the grid in F1 and getting back to being involved in the action right at the very front.
