Some random thoughts on a Friday

Some random thoughts on a Friday

It’s a perfect storm for sports fans this weekend.

NCAA football continues on Saturday and it is also the second round of the NASCAR playoffs with an afternoon race in Richmond. It’s the first weekend for the NFL, but Dallas Cowboys fans are already in a downward spiral after losing to Tampa Bay last night.

Formula 1 arrives in Monza on Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m. and I’ll be up for more than an hour because we’ve just adopted a puppy that we want to potty. As if that wasn’t enough, IndyCar will be in Portland on Sunday.

This is probably only relevant to me, but my beloved University of Nevada wolf pack is home to Idaho State University on Saturday. I can’t see it because the game isn’t airing. I’m stunned that I can’t watch the game, but I’m booting up after the wolf pack upset Cal last week.

There will be plenty of time this weekend to sit on the couch and watch NASCAR, IndyCar and F1. I apologize to my family in advance.

Back to F1 it was an interesting track as Kimi Raikkonen announced his retirement, Valterri Bottas is moving to Alfa Romeo F1 next season and George Russell is moving up from Williams F1 to Mercedes F1.

Russell’s move to Mercedes is not a shock.

Many pundits and forecasters have been claiming throughout the season that Russell makes the leap to Lewis Hamilton’s teammate in a Silver Arrow. I’m not surprised either, as Bottas underperformed and Russell had a lot of highlights this season. The guy is talented and in time could become Lewis Hamilton’s heir.

The days when I drove a Mini Cooper could be over for me. This is due to my own stupidity and not realizing that my son is still growing and he can no longer sit comfortably in the back seat for much longer. I should have bought a Mini Clubman back then and was still considering switching to one, but then an idea occurred to me.

My son will likely inherit the car I drive when he gets his driver’s license. I’m not entirely comfortable giving it something sporty and as such, I’m in the Subaru Crosstrek market. He also looked at the “Italian job” and was interested in driving a Mini Cooper on subway rails.

I think he should get something safe and slow when he learns to drive, and I’m reminded of my first car: 1985 Dodge Lancer.

It was slow with a 2.2 liter engine that delivered 99 horsepower and accelerated from 0 to 100 mph in 13.3 seconds. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the car for too long. Within three months of getting it, I was aquaplaning on Chanate Road in Santa Rosa, California. hit a car and driven through a fence.

It was destroyed, but I was safe. Nobody was injured in the accident, and I didn’t drive again until I graduated from high school. Let this be a warning to all young drivers: in the rain, do not drive a badly drivable car 15 mph above the speed limit on a winding road … the more you know.
