Williams boss Jost Capito is said to have made Albon his number one goal to replace Russell, which may leave Valtteri Bottas unpowered for 2022.

If he doesn’t get his chance in Formula 1 anymore, Albon will aim for a career in IndyCar racing and is aware that more than a year out of the sport could be too much to come back.

He said, “F1 moves relatively fast. After more than a year the car is getting tricky. A year off is all you can do. That’s what Esteban [Ocon] Did. Fernando [Alonso] is another example, but Fernando is Fernando!

“The car is moving so fast, the technology is improving. There’s no series out there that comes close to F1. You can’t jump around and do different things.”

“So it’s a year [out] maximum. A lot of the pressure now is to make sure I can do all I can and also to be active myself, to look around, to see what is out there for me. “
