The Formula Regional Asian Championship Certified by FIA is set to begin its fifth season with a new name and what is shaping up to be a record grid, with eight of the world’s leading junior single seater teams signing up for the five-stop, 15-race, UAE-based calendar.

In line with the rationalization of the FIA driver development pyramid, the re-badged Asian series remains the only official FIA-certified stepping stone to the FIA Formula 3 Championship in the region. As in previous years, the series will carry FIA Super Licence points for the top finishers, and will once again use the proven Autotecnica-engined Tatuus F.3 T-318.

Abu Dhabi Racing by Prema return, winners of the Driver title last season with recently-announced Alfa Romeo F1 driver Guanyu Zhou of China as well as the reigning Team champions. In addition, Prema Powerteam will run cars under its own banner for the first time.

Pinnacle Motorsport, runners-up in 2021 with Frenchman Pierre-Louis Chovet, return as do the Mumbai Falcons India Racing outfit, third in the Driver classification last year with Jehan Daruvala.

Evans GP have already announced Hungarian Levente Révész and 17-year-old Briton Frederick Lubin as part of its 2022 line-up, while China-based BlackArts Racing, which won the 2020 title with Dutchman Joey Alders, will be back on the grid for the new season.

British team Hitech Grand Prix, which won the inaugural title in 2018 with Raoul Hyman and again in 2019 with Ukyo Sasahara, will join what is expected to be a record grid for the series.

Making its debut in the series in French team R-ace GP, backed by 3Y for their 2022 inaugural campaign in the Formula Regional Asian Championship.

A two-day pre-season test will be held at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina Circuit on January 19 and 20, with the opening round getting underway on January 21. The championship then moves to the Dubai Autodrome for three rounds held on consecutive weekends before returning to Abu Dhabi for the finale on February 17-20. The calendar has been tweaked slightly to align with the newly-announced Saturday-Sunday weekend.
