The Finn took out the safety car at the beginning of the second lap in Portimao after bumping into Alfa Romeo’s team-mate Antonio Giovinazzi on the start-finish straight.
Raikkonen had claimed that he had been distracted by changing a few buttons on his steering wheel so that he had not noticed that he was drifting into Giovinazzi’s rear wheel.
When speaking about the team’s reaction after the race, Raikkonen said he missed the post-event debriefing but got some comments from six-year-old Robin instead.
“My son told me, ‘You always tell me to look ahead’ when he drives a go-kart,” he said. “He gave me a little bit of it …”
Alfa Romeo had hoped to make some solid progress with their car this season but is facing a difficult time in the highly competitive midfield.
Raikkonen figured his chances of impressing and getting a decent score would depend on the track features that matched his package.

“I think we were probably stronger as a track in Bahrain in general,” he said. “Maybe the conditions suit us better, maybe some of the ones we’re up against weren’t a good fit.
“But it’s a little closer than last year. We never expected to be in the middle of the field, but we have to improve. That is clear.
“We have to make the car faster to be higher. And I think there will be tracks that we can be better off and some that we might fight a little more on.
“But every team has the same problems. We just have to make the car a little faster. “
Raikkonen believes that Alfa Romeo is making overall progress as a team after undergoing a reorganization in recent years.
“If you compare where we were four years ago, we are definitely in a much better position than you see the team,” he said.
“They were almost gone by that time, but it is taking a long time to rebuild and get people back.
“Obviously the facilities are there to do a good job. Then the engine was obviously a bit difficult last year, but the car wasn’t where we obviously wanted it either. So in the end it’s always the package.
“It doesn’t matter if you have the best engine but the worst car, you are not getting the best out of it. But I think there are all the tools and all the manpower to do a good job. “
