Raikkonen is still negotiating an extension of the Alfa Romeo F1 deal until 2021

Raikkonen still in talks to extend Alfa Romeo F1 deal into 2021

Raikkonen, who is setting a new record of 323 Grand Prix starts this weekend, has long said that the decision on whether to continue next year is up to him.

Sources have suggested that a deal has already been made with the Hinwil team, but when asked if he would continue through 2021, he said he was making one final call and joked about the conflicting views on opposite ends of his unusually long career.

“Nothing has been decided yet,” he said. “And yes, it sure started with the fact that I had no experience.

“And now I’m getting too old for them to want to get rid of me! It worked in the middle. And now it’s not that great for some people anyway.

“We’ll see. Of course we have a few talks with the team. In the end, of course, it’s my decision and we’ll see what happens to it.”

Raikkonen downplayed the assumption that he had made a deal in late September when an option emerged.

“If you believe the news, maybe it is the truth. But I never had an option in my contract. So that pretty much tells you that it’s not true.

“I’ve read so many things on the news and over the years I’ve stopped reading them because maybe 90% is far from the truth. And then 10% have to do with it.

“So no, I didn’t sign anything, I didn’t sign last week or a month ago or yesterday or today. We’ll see.”

When asked for his thoughts on his 2020 season, Raikkonen admitted that Alfa Romeo wasn’t as competitive as he would have liked.

“I mean, I’m enjoying the race,” he said. “But of course we have more fun when we do better.

“It was definitely not something we wanted or where we were going, but it was clear very early on that we are not where we hoped for a lot of different reasons.

“But I still enjoy the race, we had good fights. I wouldn’t be here today if I didn’t like it, I can do other things too.”

Raikkonen also added that he was pleased that Mick Schumacher earned the current Formula 2 points in training with Alfa Romeo.

Schumacher, who will drive Antonio Giovinazzi’s car in FP1 on Friday, is closely connected to the second seat in the team – through which Ferrari has the last call due to its partnership with the team.

“We talked a few years ago and he’s a great guy and in many ways a copy of his father.

“It’s great to see him, I think it’s nice that he’s in the car tomorrow. It’s a shame for Antonio, but it’s FP1.

“Hopefully the weather will play along so we can run normally.

“If it’s as miserable as it is today, it won’t be as much fun, but I think it’s great to see him make his first appearance, especially with us.”
