Kimi Raikkonen believes Alfa Romeo’s extra run at the end of the third RP allowed him to enter Q3 with both cars for the first time in F1 2020.
Alfa Romeo made the most of the wet conditions in Istanbul Park. Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi qualified among the top ten.
Raikkonen will start from eighth place, while Giovinazzi will start in tenth place.
The 2007 world champion said the information he received in the third RP enabled him to make significant improvements for qualifying.
“I wouldn’t say it worked that well, it didn’t feel very good,” said Raikkonen. “We definitely had problems like crazy in the morning and in the end we tried to make some changes and do more laps even when the conditions were terrible and I think that helped a bit in qualifying.”
“Like I said, it wasn’t a nice feeling, but at least it was the same for everyone. We weren’t bad, so these conditions certainly helped us.”
Raikkonen may be the most experienced F1 driver at 325 starts, but even the Finn found it difficult to admit that “it was so easy to turn”.

“Sure it was one of the worst, but it is what it is. We can’t change it, so let’s just do it,” added Raikkonen. “It was as easy to turn as I did on one of my laps when I just got out of the pits, but in the end we made the most of it.
“We can’t really push, we can just try to take the shortest path and find something to hold on to. We have probably made the best of it and have to be satisfied with it. Hopefully we will see what tomorrow brings and we can be happy too . “
Giovinazzi tried to get a representative round on the board in the third quarter after trying to get the intermediates up to temperature.
