The Formula 2 championship leader Oscar Piastri was next to Charles Leclerc the only two drivers who took four consecutive poles in Formula 2.

Piastri – who will be Alpine’s official Formula 1 reserve driver for 2022 – was in fifth place after the first rounds, but drove a stormy lap in the second half of the session to break the 1:42 minute mark and open up to advance to first place.

Pourchaire briefly took first place in the last stages of the session, but ended up in third place three tenths behind, ahead of his own team-mate and Alpine Junior Christian Lundgaard, who finished fourth for his best qualifying result since the first run .
