Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda confirmed at AlphaTauri for 2022 | Race news

Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda will also drive for AlphaTauri in Formula 1 in the coming season, the Red Bull team announced on Tuesday.
Frenchman Gasly won the home Grand Prix of Italy in Monza a year ago and finished fourth in the Netherlands last weekend. He finished second in Brazil in 2019 and third in Azerbaijan last June.
Honda-backed Japanese rookie Tsunoda scored points on his debut in Bahrain in March.

The team, based in Faenza, Italy, is the only one of the 10 on the grid to have scored points in every race this season. Consistency and stability were essential for a year of major rule changes.
“This year we have seen that the positive relationship between the two of a competition on the track and a friendship off the track has proven itself for the team,” said team boss Franz Tost in a statement.
The announcement means that Red Bull’s hope of getting Thai racing driver Alexander Albon back into Formula 1 next season depends on securing a seat outside of the energy drink brand’s own two teams. Talks at Williams and Alfa Romeo are ongoing.

Gasly’s confirmation was certain that the Frenchman scored 66 of the team’s 84 points in 13 races so far this season.
Formula 1 managing director Ross Brawn said on Monday that the Frenchman was too good to stay with AlphaTauri in the long term.
“I’m really excited to continue with Scuderia AlphaTauri for another season in Formula 1, especially after seeing the progress we’ve made as a team since I joined in 2017,” said Gasly.

“Given the performance we’ve put in this season so far, I think there are great things to be done for the rest of this season and next year … I really believe that by 2022 we can work well together to get better.”
Tsunoda had rated his chances of staying at 50-50 just last week.
The 21-year-old has scored points in five races so far and is 13th in the championship.

“I am so grateful to the team that I can further expand my experience in Formula 1 with them,” he said of an announcement that kept him with Red Bull after the withdrawal from Honda at the end of this year.
The two Red Bull teams will continue to use Honda-assembled engines in Japan for the next year before Red Bull takes over production.
