New Ferrari engine an improvement on 2020

Kimi Raikkonen, Alfa Romeo, Bahrain International Circuit, 2021

According to Kimi Räikkönen, Ferrari’s new engine for 2021 already feels “better” than last year after the first two days of testing for Alfa Romeo.

Ferrari has produced a new engine for this season after the 2020 campaign was severely affected by poor speed on the straight. Their customers Alfa Romeo and Haas also had to put up with bad campaigns – Räikkönen only scored four points last year, the lowest total in his career.

After Räikkönen drove around a racetrack with the Ferrari engine in his Alfa Romeo C41 in 2021, the new engine is already an improvement, but it was too early to judge how it compares to the team’s competitors.

“I’m sure they made progress,” he said. “It’s better, but then you’d expect the other manufacturers to have improved too.

“But compared to what we had last year, it’s in a better position. We’ll have to wait and see where it is when the race starts. “

On the morning of the opening day of the three-day test, Raikkonen drove 63 laps – more than a full racetrack. Team mate Antonio Giovinazzi drove a total of 194 laps on Friday afternoon and a full day on Saturday.

“It’s still early, of course,” says Raikkonen. “We had no problems all day yesterday and I think this morning was the same. So everything is fine on this side.

“The car felt a little different than last year, but it feels very good in some places. The wind made it very difficult yesterday and elsewhere off the track. But I think it’s a good starting point. “
