Kubica returns to Alfa Romeo’s cockpit for Silverstone FP1

Kubica returns to Alfa Romeo cockpit for Silverstone FP1

One-time Grand Prix winner Kubica joined Alfa Romeo as reserve and test driver for the 2020 season after making his full-time F1 return with Williams last year.

Last month, as part of his agreement with the team, the Pole was represented in the opening training for the Styrian Grand Prix and the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alfa Romeo has announced that Kubica will have more time in the cockpit for the 70th anniversary Grand Prix this weekend at Silverstone, replacing Antonio Giovinazzi for the first practice session.

“I’m happy to get back behind the wheel in this busy early part of the season,” said Kubica. “Driving an F1 car is always special, but especially in a place like Silverstone.

“The track has so much history and is one that tests both the driver and the machine: It’s one of the great places in motorsport and driving here, even without the fans, creates so much attention.

“My main focus, however, is still to help the team develop the car.”

Alfa Romeo F1 Team Principal Frederic Vasseur added: “I am delighted that Robert is returning to the car this weekend.

“His feedback has been of the highest quality in his previous outings and his work has proven very valuable to the team, both in the car and during our engineering meetings.

“Robert knows Silverstone inside and out and I’m sure he will help us take a step forward as the season progresses.”

Kubica’s FP1 outing takes place a week after his DTM debut at BMW in Spa, where he finished 14th in both races.

Kubica moved to the DTM after failing to secure a full-time F1 seat for this season after a difficult one-year stint race at Williams in which he scored the team’s only point in the 2019 German Grand Prix.

His next DTM outing will take place from August 15 to 16 on the Grand Prix weekend in Spain at the Lausitzring in Germany.
