The former Grand Prix winner Kubica has made two appearances for Alfa Romeo this season and represented Kimi Räikkönen in Zandvoort and Monza after the Finn was infected with COVID-19.
Kubica has teamed up with Alfa Romeo as a reserve driver in 2020 after spending the past season full-time with Williams, and his main supporter, Orlen, is the team’s title sponsor.
Alfa Romeo appears to have the last vacant spot on the F1 grid for next season and has a shortlist of around five or six drivers to partner with Valtteri Bottas, who will be joining from Mercedes.
Among the participants are the Formula 2 driver Guanyu Zhou and the reigning driver of the team, Antonio Giovinazzi.
While Kubica felt that one could “never say never” about a possible F1 comeback, he was aware that there were many more drivers higher on the list than he was to snag the spot.
“I’ve learned from my life that anything can happen day to day, positive or negative,” said Kubica.
“So never say never. But realistically, I think there are some other drivers who are likely higher up the list.
“I don’t know, you have to ask Fred [Vasseur].
“I have my racing program with endurance races, which of course I normally focus all my attention on.
“It’s been a little different since Zandvoort because I’m here.
“I do not know what [the future] will bring. But whatever it will bring, the future, I just have to wait and see. “
Kubica drove in the DTM last year and spent 2021 with the WRT team in the European Le Mans Series. He also made his debut at the Daytona 24 Hours and Le Mans 24 Hours, where he only got one lap victory before a late car crash.
The Pole felt that people had underestimated the challenge of jumping into an F1 car at the last minute and getting back into the rhythm after being called up just before the last practice session at Zandvoort.
“I would say most other people don’t know how big and difficult it is to get back into the F1 rhythm,” said Kubica.
“To be honest, I liked my approach. Probably my experience – I don’t want to say my age because I’m getting old! – I think that also helped me to stay calm, to take step by step, to increase the game when I was comfortable.
“When I had no self-confidence, which was very obvious in my opinion, I played it safe.”
