Sauber has announced details of its first road car collaboration with Alfa Romeo – the title sponsor of the famous Swiss Formula 1 team.
Sauber Engineering, part of the larger Sauber Group, was involved in the design, development and manufacture of the new Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA and GTAm and used its 50 years of experience in motorsport to optimize the carbon fiber elements of the high-performance models.
Development was particularly focused on improving the aerodynamic elements of the cars, with special attention paid to the front bumper and adjustable front splitter, side skirts, diffuser, spoiler of the GTA and ventilation of the GTAm. Sauber has also completely redesigned and completely covered the underbody of the car.

As part of the process, the components were developed in the state-of-the-art wind tunnel by Sauber at its headquarters in Hinwil. The development leads to a significantly improved grip at high speeds, while the Giulia GTAm has a lift coefficient that is twice as high as the GTA model and three times as high as that of the Giulia Quadrifoglio.
Away from the wind tunnel, Alfa Romeo’s F1 drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi carried out practical tests at the Balocco test site in Italy, where Alfa Romeo sports cars have been developed since the 1960s. There, both star drivers gave the Italian brand’s engineers valuable technical feedback in order to further improve the cars.

“Working with Alfa Romeo on the development, manufacture and manufacture of the Giulia GTA and GTAm was a great opportunity for Sauber Engineering to apply the know-how acquired in decades of high-end performance work in Formula 1 and beyond” , said Christoph Hansen, Director of Technology and Innovation at Sauber Engineering.
“The know-how and technologies that we have developed for motorsport, such as our lightweight construction solutions and our production processes, have found ideal application in working with Alfa Romeo, as has the aerodynamics knowledge that we have been able to transfer from the Stretch out onto the street. “
