
Alfa Romeo test driver Robert Kubica will drive the car at FP1 in Austria. This is the first time this season that the Polish driver has got his hands on an Alfa Romeo C41.

Kubica will take over the reins from Kimi Raikkonen in the first training session in Spielberg. The reserve drivers in F1 give the team valuable insights and also give the drivers valuable experience in the car.
Robert Kubica’s experience has proven to be valuable for the Swiss team. Kubica was one of the most talented and fastest drivers on the grid in the late 2000s.

He won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008 and was leading the championship at that time. Kubica finished fourth in the championship. Robert Kubica returned to Formula 1 in 2019 after a terrible 2011 rally car accident. He suffered an almost fatal injury in the accident.

According to the Sauber official website, both Kubica and Alfa Romeo announced the news of his return to the Styrian Grand Prix.

Alfa Romeo team principal Fredric Vasseur was delighted when he announced the news from Kubica in FP1.
“Robert is an important resource for our team and having him in the car in Austria will be very valuable, especially since we will be driving in the same place for two weeks in a row.
“Robert did a really good job on his first outings this year and we look forward to working with him again as he helps the team develop,” said Vasseur.
“I’m looking forward to being back in the car next week. The team have taken some big steps forward recently and you can feel the confidence throughout the squad.
“I know how important it is to keep the momentum going and I am ready to do my part to ensure that the two weekends in Austria are as successful as possible,” said Kubica.

Can Kubica return to F1?

Robert Kubica made a comeback in Formula 1 with Williams in the 2020 season. He struggled throughout the season as he ended up almost consistently behind his teammate George Russell.
At the 2019 German Grand Prix, he scored the only points for Williams. Though his return to F1 seems bleak as there are no places for him in the near future.
