Frédéric Vasseur is in high spirits and has every reason to be. The Alfa Romeo team boss sees that his team is doing particularly well in 2022 and that the good form of the Sauber partnership is no fluke.
At Imola, Alfa Romeo scored big points again with Valtteri Bottas. The Finn finished on P5 and even had the chance to make it a P4 on the last lap. The Mercedes of George Russell still proved just fast enough to retain P4. In any case, for Alfa Romeo it was a particularly strong performance. The team is currently fifth in the constructors’ classification with 25 points. With that, you can say that they lead the midfield. McLaren, with a 21 point lead, is just a bit too far away and together with Mercedes forms the sub-top.

Verstappen: “I think this weekend is going to be pretty crazy!”
Vasseur very confident
The points are mainly due to Bottas who, with 24 points, is now in eighth place in the championship. His debuting teammate Guanyu Zhou has also already scored a point. Vasseur is therefore happy. In a press statement, he says: “We go into the upcoming race from a strong position and in a confident mood: We showed in Imola that our strong form at the beginning of the season is no fluke.” In fact, Vasseur sees his team getting stronger and growing every race.
The fact that Bottas fought for fourth place in Imola shows that the F1 field is very close together; that can instill fear in their opponents. Vasseur knows that too: “We know we can score big in every race, but the execution has to be flawless if we want to beat our rivals.”
