Antonio Giovinazzi is keen to renew his contract with Alfa Romeo after scoring the team’s first point at the Monaco Grand Prix in 2021.
Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this weekend, Giovinazzi said he has yet to figure out if he will stay with the team for the 2022 F1 season.
“I don’t know,” he admitted. “All I can do now is do a good job, drive fast and then we’ll see what happens next year.”
Giovinazzi has been driving for the team since 2019. “I would really, really like to stay with my team next year, where I’m still on,” he said.
“Since I’m staying in season three, I know the people very well. I have a good relationship with the people inside, with Fred [Vasseur, Alfa Romeo team principal] as.
“So we’ll see what happens. But at the moment, as I said, I can only concentrate on myself and try to do well. “
In the course of the season so far, Giovinazzi has done well with experienced teammate Kimi Räikkönen, whom he has regularly outqualified. After having ridden little races in the two years leading up to his debut, Giovinazzi says he feels the advantage of being back in regular competition.
“It’s my third season in Formula 1, so I gained more experience last year. And I think this year we have a faster car, a faster engine that we can have more fun with.
“When you feel better in the car, it’s easier to be at the limit, to push more. For my part, I think that at the beginning of the season it was still my goal to improve compared to the first and second seasons. And I’m glad that all of this work works in winter.
“I just have to keep working hard, trying to find more [in] myself. I think I can still improve a lot. “
Giovinazzi said his teammate contributed to his progress. “Having Kimi by my side is a big help because he’s an experienced and fast driver. So it’s good to have him and learn from him. And I am happy that all this work, as I have already mentioned, is paying off. “
