The Italian is part of Ferrari’s junior driver program and has been under pressure to improve his game this year as youngsters like Mick Schumacher, Callum Ilott and Robert Shwartzman impressed in Formula 2.
Ferrari decided to give Giovinazzi another year at Alfa Romeo for 2021, with Schumacher instead being used at Haas after the German won the FIA F2 title.
It is the third season for Giovinazzi at Alfa Romeo, who has been with the team full-time since early 2019.
Given his performance, Giovinazzi felt he made good progress during his second full season, scooping four points in the campaign – the same number as his teammate Kimi Raikkonen who helped Alfa secure eighth place in the constructors’ championship .
“I have improved, I would say, and I felt more comfortable with the car, with the team and everything,” he said.
“That’s what every young driver says in his career, you always feel a little more nervous in the first season. Everything is brand new to you, and I just feel more comfortable with everything now. “
“Of course there are still a lot of things to improve and I want to do the same for next season. I just want to take one more step and try to improve myself.”
Giovinazzi sees his biggest step forward in his racing performances – both in terms of his starts and in terms of his general pace.
When asked where he thinks he has made the most gains, he said, “I think a lot of points. I would say mainly in the race because it was one of my negative points last season.
“On the first lap, when I wasn’t that great, I think it was a pretty good season this year. And I also made good progress in terms of the race pace.
“Of course it is with the help of Kimi too [Raikkonen] pretended because i think he’s one of the best there. So yeah, I think I’m happy with the progress, but there is still a lot to be done. “
