Ferrari are set to replace Mattia Binotto as team principal at the end of the season with Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur lined up to come in as his replacement. The 2022 season originally looked to be the year Ferrari were going to turn their fortune around with Charles Leclerc winning two of the opening three races.
Ferrari looked to have a more reliable package than Red Bull initially, but Max Verstappen soon blew Leclerc and Carlos Sainz away. And they now find themselves fighting to hold onto second in the Constructors’ Championship following Mercedes’ one-two at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Binotto has faced strong criticism in Italy for not bringing the glory days back to Ferrari during his time as team principal. He replaced Maurizio Arrivabene as Ferrari team principal in 2019 with the famous F1 team going through a barren spell of success.
They’ve shown promising signs this year with the pairing of Leclerc and Sainz working well. But Gazzetta della Sport claim it hasn’t been enough to save Binotto from the sack at Ferrari.
It is claimed that Ferrari’s top officials were looking at replacing Binotto from as early as last summer. Ferrari president John Elkann is the man said to have pointed towards Vasseur as the ideal Binotto replacement.
