Ferrari has no say in F1 driver selection in 2022: Alfa Romeo CEO

Alfa Romeo Racing is one of the few teams to have announced its driver line-up for the 2022 F1 season. Interestingly, the likelihood that the Italian team will renew their contract with Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi is rather slim.

On the one hand, the Finn is already 41 years old, so he might as well call it a day at the end of this season. Giovinazzi hasn’t impressed much this season either, and of course you can blame the car, of course. Still, there remains a huge question mark about the future of the duo at Alfa Romeo.

So, if Alfa Romeo decides to let go of one of the drivers, who will have a say in determining the replacement? One could assume that Ferrari would select the driver as the engine supplier for the midfield team. In reality, however, this is not the case, according to Jean-Philippe Imparato, CEO of Alfa Romeo.

What did the CEO of Alfa Romeo F1 say?

In an interview with L’Equipe, Imparato stated that Fred Vasseur will make the final decision on who drives for the team. He believed that Vasseur knew how to run an F1 team and that is why he has such freedom.

“Each his own task. So the answer is no! There is only one who chooses. It will be Fred Vasseur! I know how to sell cars, he knows how to lead a team, ”he said.

“He’s been doing this for twenty-five years and he’s doing it very well. We decided by mutual agreement that he will decide in the last instance who will take the place. And as always, he’ll do it at the right time, ”added the Frenchman.

Who could replace Raikkonen at Alfa Romeo?

Since Alfa Romeo drives a Ferrari engine at the rear, the team has the freedom to choose from Ferrari’s junior program.

And of course the most attractive driver in this category is Callum Ilott. The Briton is currently a substitute driver at Alfa Romeo and also a test driver at Ferrari. Hence, he could be a familiar face in the Alfa Romeo garage and be an amazing choice for the outfit.

And also Mick Schumacher, who is currently driving for Haas. The German has not had an impressive Formula 1 debut so far, the American team had its worst season.

Schumacher Jr. will therefore long to get into the much faster Alfa Romeo and possibly drive for the points from 2022. So two incredibly strong options for the team. But who will they ultimately choose?
