F2 boss shares his disappointment that the Ferrari-backed junior is not in F1

F2 boss shares his disappointment that the Ferrari-backed junior is not in F1

It looks like Chinese driver Guanyu Zhou will be the only driver called up to F1 next season. But he’s not the F2 championship leader at the moment; it is Oscar Piastri with team-mate Robert Schwartzman in P3. Prema Racing Head Rene Rozin believes that both drivers who are part of the Alpine and Ferrari Driver Academy respectively deserve a chance in Formula 1.

The two were the standout drivers of the 2021 season, but it looks like they’ll both miss the seat. The only remaining seat in Formula 1 is available from Alfa Romeo Racing. Despite being part of the FDA and the Italian team that supplies the engines to the Swiss team, Robert is not in the running for the seat.

Rene Rozin comments on the Ferrari-supported junior Robert Schwartzman

As reported by Championat.com, Rozin blamed the unusual calendar of the F2 Championship in 2021 for Robert missing the seat. He explained that due to the calendar, the drivers could not build momentum and use their experience week after week.

“I want to emphasize that on a calendar like this year, both Robert and Oscar are doing a great job. With such long breaks, they cannot really use the experience of previous races and only have one training session to get back in shape, ”said Rozin.

“Under such conditions, their performances should be noted. Both drivers deserve to be in Formula 1. Such a calendar hinders riders fighting for titles and top spots until such a late point in the season that they could thwart their plans for the next year.

It is more difficult for pilots to negotiate and for us as a team. It is good that next year we are going back to a more uniform format, in which there will be more stages and the season ends a little earlier than now, ”said Rozin.

The gap between races in the 2021 F2 Championship has made it difficult to monitor drivers’ progress. Nevertheless, both Piastri and Schwartzman were consistently fast.

It’s really a shame that a talent like Robert Schwartzman doesn’t find a place in Formula 1. But hopefully we would see the driver in the paddock while Ferrari learns more with the team.
