The French Grand Prix has added another feather in Max Verstappen’s cap and pushed his lead to an impressive 63 points ahead of Charles Leclerc. Leclerc had looked certain to win the French GP until an error on lap 18 caused him to crash.

Everything we expected to see at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Our view ahead of the race:

This does appear to be Verstappen and Red Bull’s year. The young driver has won seven Grands Prix so far. Meanwhile, Leclerc has only won three and Lewis Hamilton hasn’t won any, despite finishing in the top three on five occasions.

The new cars have had an impact on driver performance and frequent uncertainties about the weather have kept everyone on edge. With a sport like Formula One racing, it can be incredibly hard to predict the outcome of any one race in advance.

The French GP is a great example of this. For anyone betting on the race, it looked obvious that Leclerc and Ferrari would carry the day, and up until lap 18, those beliefs were held up. However, a split-second crash occurred and Leclerc didn’t even finish.

Both Formula One racing and sports betting are growing in popularity in the United States. Motorsports fans are being lured away from NASCAR by the more interesting Formula One, and sports betting provides an extra way to enjoy a race.

As sports betting in the United States becomes more accessible, betting fans are branching out to betting on sports beyond the big four of football, baseball, basketball and hockey. An influx of new bettors on motorsports can also help bring more attention to the sport in US markets.

Fans new and old are likely to have an exciting time during the remainder of this year’s Grand Prix season. Betting on Verstappen to win any race seems like it has a high likelihood of paying out, but as we noted above, you can never be certain with racing.

The Hungarian Grand Prix is taking place on July 31 at the Hungaroring just outside of Budapest. Here is a quick rundown of the circuit and our thoughts on everything we expect to see at this race.

Everything we expected to see at the Hungarian Grand Prix

The Hungaroring

The Hungaroring is a track built in 1986 and was in fact the first track to be built “behind the Iron Curtain”. It has a reputation for being a dusty track since it is fairly underused. This dust has a benefit, though – it prevents the track from becoming too fast, a common problem with underused tracks.

The track has 14 turns along its 4.381km (2.722 miles) length. The hairpin turn at the end of the long straight has long been considered the best place to overtake and has seen some dramatic moments. The Formula One lap record at the Hungaroring is held by Lewis Hamilton, with a time of 1:16.627.

The terrain of the track has led to it being nicknamed “Monaco without the buildings”. It is twisty and bumpy, which can make it very difficult for drivers to overtake one another. All of this adds up to make the Hungaroring a circuit that never fails to deliver an interesting race.

The schedule

There will be three free practice sessions prior to the qualifying session. The first two practice sessions will be held on Friday, July 29 and the third will be held the next day. The qualifying session will be held on July 30, with the GP to follow on Sunday, July 31.

Our expectations ahead

It’s impossible to deny that Max Verstappen is a force to be reckoned with and we anticipate seeing him on the podium again at the Hungarian GP. However, it seems highly likely that this could be Lewis Hamilton’s opportunity to land a first-place finish.

Everything we expected to see at the Hungarian Grand Prix

After the Leclerc crash and Verstappen win, all of the discussion coming out of the French GP this weekend has been about Mercedes. This was the team’s best race of season, with both Hamilton and George Russell securing podium spots.

There has been concern in the Mercedes camp about the tires not being in the optimum window, but with results like this, they appear to be closer than ever to solving that issue. Other issues arising from the new car designs also seem to be slowly coming under control.

This is one of Hamilton’s best tracks. He has set the record lap time on this circuit and knows it incredibly well. Hamilton has won the Hungarian Grand Prix eight times, most recently in 2018, 2019 and 2020. In 2021, he came in second.

Leclerc’s frustrating recent loss has the potential to either derail him a bit for the next week or two, or push him to a win. It is hard to tell, especially when he has obviously taken the French GP loss quite badly.

No matter what, this is setting up to be a fast, aggressive race.

At least here are the winners of the 2022 edition!
