In the United States, Mario Andretti is the racing driver whose name is probably best known to the public. During his decade-long career, Andretti has raced among the winners several times and in a large number of racing series and venues. He is a former Formula 1 champion (1978), a four-time IndyCar champion and an Indy 500 winner (1969). And while we mortals probably can’t drive like Mario Andretti, we can drive one of Mario Andretti’s cars, particularly this 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV-6 that is currently for sale at classic car maker LBI Limited.
Based on the pictures of this Alfa, the car shows just under 36,000 miles. This GTV-6 is finished in Grigio over a light brown leather interior. The power is provided by a 2.5-liter DOHC V6. The equipment includes a five-speed manual gearbox, electric windows, air conditioning, a wooden steering wheel and a Blaupunkt cassette stereo system.
Andretti drove for the Alfa Romeo F1 team in 1981 and also appeared in advertisements for the GTV-6. In 1976 there was even a limited edition by Mario Andretti of the former European market Alfa Romeo GTV. This car was reportedly a gift from the automaker and was delivered in May 1981. He reportedly kept it for a year, even though his possession is documented (click the View Documents tab in the list.
The current price for this Alfa is $ 48,000, although there may be some wiggle room there as this car appeared not to have been sold at an RM Sotheby’s auction in May 2020 that hit a top bid of $ 28,000. That’s roughly $ 8,000 more than auctioned in 2016, though the car has had thousands of dollars in use since then. Regardless of the price, this is a cool Alfa with a direct link to America’s most famous racing driver.
