"Checo is interested" - Alfa Romeo F1 boss reveals that Kimi Raikkonen is still a priority

Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur has announced that he is interested in continuing with Kimi Raikkonen for the next season. There have been strong rumors that the 41-year-old Finn is considering retirement. However, should Kimi opt for another season, Vasseur will focus his efforts on extending the veteran’s contract.

Speaking to the media, Vasseur said: “You have some junior Ferrari drivers. But you have Kimi to us first to know what he wants to do and what we want to do with him, and then we will see with the others. I won’t find anyone more experienced than Kimi. “

There has been much speculation that Mick Schumacher could replace Antonio Giovinazzi in Alfa Romeo’s second seat. Mick is one of the brightest jewels in the Ferrari Driver Academy and currently ranks 2nd in the F2 championship behind Callum Ilott. Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto also appreciated the son of the legendary Michael Schumacher. He had previously indicated the time in which Mick will make a name for himself in the top motorsport division.Formula 1 F1 – Italian Grand Prix – Autodromo Nazionale Monza, Monza, Italy – Kimi Raikkonen of Alfa Romeo during practice | Courtesy of Luca Bruno / Pool via REUTERS In the meantime, Giovinazzi has had nothing to report in his two seasons at Alfa Romeo. The Italian driver finished 17th in the drivers’ championship last season and scored points in only 6 of the 29 races in which he has participated. However, this season he was better than Raikkonen. The Alfa Romeo board, which often struggles to get out of the first quarter, could try to mess things up next season.

An alternative approach also includes a move for the recently published Sergio Perez. The Mexican driver will be leaving Racing Point at the end of the season and would be interested in a seat in 2021.

What are the options when Kimi Raikkonen retires?

“I think Checo is interested in all available seats on the grid,” said Vasseur.

“Of course we now have a lot of drivers on the list. I won’t move, I told you last week or the week before. In the course of September we will discuss the next year with our drivers and then decide together what we have to do. “

It could come down to deciding on second place between Sergio Perez or Mick Schumacher.
