Aston Martin signs Red Bull Aero boss as new F1 technical director

Aston Martin signs Red Bull head of aero as new F1 technical director

Fallows has been with Red Bull for 15 years after joining the Milton Keynes team in 2006 as a team leader in the aerodynamics department.

In 2014, Fallows was the subject of a lawsuit after McLaren believed he’d added him to their squad before believing he’d been tricked into staying at Red Bull.

In the end, the matter was settled privately between team principals Christian Horner and Ron Dennis, and Fallows was duly appointed as Head of Aerodynamics at Red Bull.

However, with Aston Martin launching a major recruiting campaign, Fallows has been lured into the Silverstone roster and will be added there as part of a revamped structure.

Andy Green, who was previously Aston Martin’s Technical Director, is moving to a new role as Chief Technical Officer to oversee the team’s advancement.

Green will be responsible for Performance Director Tom McCullough as well as the newcomers Fallows and Engineering Director Luca Furbatto, who has been signed by Alfa Romeo.

Aston Martin team boss Otmar Szafnauer said the aim of the new structure is to lay the foundations that the team needs to be able to aim for the title win in the long term.

“Everyone at Aston Martin strives to win Grand Prix and World Championships and this new and improved structure we have created reflects those of the most successful teams in F1 today,” he said.

Red Bull will keep Fallows until their current contract expires and they hope it won’t affect their 2021 title hopes.

Team principal Christian Horner knew that Red Bull would miss Fallows and suggested that his replacement would come from an internal promotion rather than looking for the squad elsewhere.

“It goes without saying that Dan will be missed as he played an important role during his time at Red Bull Racing and I would like to thank him for his contribution to the success of the team,” said Horner.

“However, we recognize that the opportunity to take on the role of technical director on an F1 team is an attractive next step in his career.

“This change in turn creates exciting internal opportunities for promotion if we look to the future and draw on the wealth of talent within the broader team.”

Horner added that Fallows’ contract clearance will take a while to go into effect.

“I won’t go into details, but it certainly won’t be in the next few years.”
