Alfa Romeo has confirmed that they will keep Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi on board alongside Kimi Raikkonen for 2020. The news leaves only four F1 racing courses unconfirmed for the next year.

The 25-year-old Giovinazzi could again be the only Italian on the starting line-up as he prepares for his second season in Formula 1 alongside veteran Raikkonen. He is currently in 18th place in the drivers’ standings with four points.

“I’m really looking forward to staying with the team in 2020,” said Giovinazzi.

“I am grateful for the incredible support I received in my first full season in Formula 1: Everyone in the team has been by my side since I joined and I am very much looking forward to continuing our journey together.

“We have learned a lot this year and I am confident that we can take a big step forward in the next season. I won’t be a rookie anymore, so there are no more excuses for me: I want to be competitive from the start of the championship and repay the trust that the team has placed in me. “

Giovinazzi, who finished 14th in the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, tested for Haas and Sauber in 2017 and again for the latter team in 2018, before moving to the redesigned Alfa Romeo team this season.

Antonio Giovinazzi “not fast enough” in Austin

Team principal Frederic Vasseur added: “Antonio has done really well this year and I am very happy to confirm that he will stay with Alfa Romeo Racing for 2020.

“The way in which he has integrated into the team and has continuously improved in his first full season in the sport is very promising and we cannot wait to reach his full potential in further cooperation.

“Antonio has developed to be a very fast driver, even against a benchmark as tough as Kimi, and we expect him to develop even further as experience increases. His technical feedback, work ethic and positive attitude will help us keep our team going to advance. ” , as well as the consistency of an unchanged line-up for the next season. “

So far this season, Giovinazzi has been surpassed by Raikkonen by 27 points, although the qualifying battle is much closer. The Finn leads his young teammate with 10-9 before two grands prix.

Still, Alfa Romeo ranks ninth overall as none of the drivers have enjoyed outstanding form lately. Giovinazzi scored his last point in Singapore, while Raikkonen has not scored since the Hungarian GP.

The places for 2020 are still unconfirmed at Williams alongside George Russell and at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen. Toro Rosso is the only team that has announced one of the two drivers for the next season.
