Alfa Romeo’s F1 team loses appeal against the 2019 German GP penalties

Alfa Romeo F1 team loses appeal against 2019 German GP penalties

The team had appealed the 30-second penalties that dropped Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi from seventh and eighth to twelfth and thirteenth, but post-race penalties are not among the penalties against F1 rules Appeal can be lodged.

Although Alfa sporting director Beat Zehnder said last month that the team would not risk the appeal if it did not have “some arguments to win,” the case was ruled inadmissible by the FIA on Tuesday – Alfa said.

A full decision is expected to be released later.

The decision means that Williams and Robert Kubica’s only point from the 2019 F1 season is certain as the Alfa downgrades brought it to 10th place.

It also means world champion Lewis Hamilton will keep the two points he scored for finishing ninth in the chaotic race.

The penalties were imposed for violations of clutch adjustment due to Alfa breaking rules designed to prevent teams from using an equivalent of traction control.

Alfa team boss Frederic Vasseur had argued at the time that the problem was beyond the control of the team.

“The situation occurred during the laps that we spent standing behind the safety car before the start. We had a clutch malfunction that was beyond our control and we will investigate further,” he said.

“We respect the FIA process and the work of the stewards, but we will appeal this decision as we believe we have the reasons and evidence to set it aside.”
