Alfa Romeo was the first team to win a world championship in F1

In an exclusive interview with AutoSport Alfa Romeo Sauber, team boss Fred Vasseur found out that his team could not have started in 2021 if the planned rule changes for 2021 after the pandemic had not been postponed to 2022. “Such an action (freezing of parts) is of course never easy because you feared giving someone else an advantage. However, we were in such a difficult situation that we had to do it,” explains the Alfa Romeo boss team Autosport.

“We also imagined there would be teams against such measures. If you feel that your car is not driving well in Barcelona, you don’t want it to last 18 months,” he said.

“Fortunately we did that because I think we wouldn’t have been there as a team otherwise,” said Vasseur.

He noted that while the financial aspect was a big part of the problem, even if it wasn’t, the team would not have been competitive, which would have reduced the motivation for everyone working on the project. This is important considering that the team represents the Alfa Romeo brand, which was the first F1 world champion in the 1950s.
