Alfa Romeo returned to Formula 1 as the title sponsor and technical partner of Sauber for the 2018 season and that partnership will continue into 2019.
Pistonheads reported on Tuesday that the engineering department of the Swiss team and Alfa Romeo will be working together on road vehicles in the future. The extent of the collaboration is murky as Sauber appeared to be teasing a “secret project” while Alfa Romeo downplayed the company’s future influence.

Team boss Frederic Vasseur informed the website that Sauber and Alfa Romeo are working on a project outside of Formula 1 and it is almost complete. He called the collaboration with Alfa Romeo on road cars a “big opportunity” and suggested that a number of Alfa Romeo cars influenced by Sauber could be brought to life. But chief designer Klaus Busse, who oversees the design of Alfa Romeo alongside other Fiat Chrysler Automobiles brands, seemed to dispel the cheers Vasseur showed.
“The idea that something (more extreme) will come as a reaction to our F1 team, I do not consider necessary, since our cars are now as powerful as they are,” said Busse. He noted that Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio are already “a handful” and unless a buyer is a professional racer there isn’t much room to make them more extreme. That could rule out a Red Bull Racing-Aston Martin-like partnership for a hypercar like the Valkyrie. Alfa Romeo and Sauber sound far apart as to how much cooperation there will be.

Alfa Romeo’s return to F1 last year was barely successful as the team finished eighth. However, the team has high hopes for 2019 with a star driver and a new racing car ready to roll.
