Alfa Romeo keeps Giovinazzi for the 2020 F1 season

Alfa Romeo retains Giovinazzi for 2020 F1 season

Despite having had a difficult start to the year, the Italian’s seat was never really in question after his form improvement mid-year and because there was no obvious alternative to a seat reserved for a young Ferrari driver.

The best result of his rookie season so far was his ninth place in Monza, although he was eighth in Germany before receiving a penalty for a technical violation.

“Antonio did really well this year and I’m very happy to confirm that he will stay with Alfa Romeo Racing in 2020,” said team principal Fred Vasseur.

“The way he has integrated into the team and continued to improve in his first full season in the sport is very promising and we can’t wait to reach his full potential as we continue this journey together.

“Antonio has developed to be a very fast driver, even against a benchmark as tough as Kimi, and we expect him to develop even further as experience increases. His technical feedback, work ethic and positive attitude will help us keep our team going to advance. ” . “

The message locks the F1 door Hulkenberg, who is not a contender for the second Williams drive, which the Formula 2 frontrunner is expected to take over Nicholas Latifi.

Hulkenberg previously ruled out IndyCar and Formula E as his options beyond F1, but DTM looks like a serious possibility.

Its representatives are said to have held talks about a move to Germany’s leading racing series, with BMW being the most likely target.

Hulkenberg said he only spoke to his lawyers and via the DTM link: “I find that amusing again. Don’t be too sure. Nothing will be announced on Tuesday, believe me.”

A move to the DTM would not necessarily mean the end of Hülkenberg’s F1 career, as several places are available for the 2021 season, although he has ruled out a reverse driver or simulator role for ’20.

Hülkenberg came to Formula 1 after a glamorous junior career, including the GP2 title as a rookie and winning the A1 Grand Prix series for Team Germany.

However, the 32-year-old has never found himself in a top-of-the-line F1 car and holds the record for most starts without a podium.
