Alfa Romeo boss plays F1 2022 graduation for Oscar Piastri. down

Since Alfa Romeo has the last vacancy on the grid for 2022, the Swiss team is open to looking after a large number of young talent in F2.

Favorite for the seat is Guanyu Zhou, but the Chinese is currently led by Piastri who had a stellar rookie campaign.

Piastri’s form has sparked discussions that he already deserves a promotion to F1, especially if he ends up winning the F2 championship.

But Vasseur suggests that Alfa Romeo disregard Piastri because it thinks he’s already up for a role at Alpine as he’s part of the academy.

“Oscar does a very good job and has been very consistent over the last few weekends, but as far as I know he’s linked to Renault or Alpine,” said Vasseur.

With Formula 1 rules set to change over the next year to force teams to use rookie drivers in a series of Friday sessions, one option is for Piastri to take on a test role at Alpine for 2022.

Vasseur said it would make little sense for Alpine to get Piastri through the junior ranks only to fire him to another team.

“If you are investing in a driver for all of the junior series and you have a long-term program with him, I see no point in letting him go to another team, it would be strange,” he explained.

However, Vasseur is well aware of how good the young Australian is.

“He’s doing a very, very strong job when you compare himself to the past, but it’s crystal clear that he’s one of the best in the field today and he did a great job last year until he fought to the last event “, he said.

“He is one of the young children who will definitely be successful in Formula One.”

While Alfa Romeo had proposed calling its partner for Valtteri Bottas in September 2022, the team has now postponed the matter.

“We are in no rush to make this decision,” he said. “We have a few options on the table and we need to take our time to decide, but we’re in no hurry.

“The situation will not change in the next few days and we will make a decision soon.”
