After Alfa Romeo missed points in Bahrain, Alfa Romeo travels to Imola for its first home Grand Prix of the season. With tight margins in a tightly packed midfield, the Italian team would like to build on the strong performance of last year’s Imola Grand Prix. The team finished both cars in the points in 2020.

Team boss Frederic Vasseur summed up the Grand Prix weekend in Bahrain as a “solid start to the season”. Looking ahead to the second round of the championship in Imola, the Frenchman said:

“We’ve made a significant leap in performance, possibly one of the biggest in the field, and we’re in midfield now, but you have to get the top ten across to take the points, that has to be ours.” Aim for Imola. “

Qualifying is extremely important to get a good result at Imola. Team boss Frederic Vasseur repeated this feeling and said:

“We saw how difficult it is to overtake on this track, so our performance on Saturday will be crucial to ensure that we get into the race in the best possible position to score points.”

Alfa Romeo would like to repeat last season’s performance

Alfa Romeo achieved its best result of 2020 in Imola. Former world champion Kimi Raikkonen finished in P9, while Italian Antonio Giovinazzi finished in P10.

The team scored three of its eight points on the Italian cult track in the 2020 season. Both drivers were supported by a one-stop strategy that played to their advantage and helped them advance through midfield.

Despite showing a decent performance at the season opener in Bahrain, they were one of four teams to miss points. Since only the top 10 finishers achieve championship points according to the current regulations, Alfa Romeo has to be faster at Imola.

Regarding the weekend ahead, Raikkonen said:

“We are confident that we can be in the middle of the battle for points at Imola, but we have no illusions that it will be easy. We saw in Bahrain that even a good weekend doesn’t mean a top ten finish, so we know that from Thursday to Sunday we have to improve everything we do: the difference between being just behind the top teams and outside of the top ten teams will be very small. “

Regarding the team’s expectations for the weekend, Kimi Raikkonen explained the need to be closer to the leading midfield, referring to the top 10. Both drivers saw the potential for points at the Imola Grand Prix.
