Is Schumacher set for Mercedes F1 role in 2023? – Motorsport Week

Is Schumacher set for Mercedes F1 role in 2023?

Mick Schumacher could take up a reserve Formula 1 role with Mercedes in 2023 if he loses his full-time seat at Haas.

Auto Motor und Sport reports that the German driver is attracting interest from the Brackley-based squad, who could look to Schumacher if Daniel Ricciardo looks elsewhere.

Ricciardo has been heavily linked to a third driver role at Mercedes after admitting that he won’t be racing in F1 next year.

Schumacher is believed to be contending against Nico Hulkenberg for the second seat at Haas alongside Kevin Magnussen, who is tied to a multi-year contract.

AMus also reports that Alpine is interested in Schumacher as a replacement for Oscar Piastri, who will race with McLaren in 2023.

Jack Doohan, who took part in FP1 with Alpine last time out in Mexico, is set to focus on his second Formula 2 campaign following a successful rookie season.

“I think we can wrap it up pretty quickly,” Haas team boss Guenther Steiner said ahead of this weekend’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix. “Hopefully next week we can announce something, whatever we’re doing.

“Hopefully, that’s my objective, but I don’t promise it. I hope before [Abu Dhabi]. When I say, ‘I hope,’ it’s not a fact.

When asked to clarify if a decision has been made, Steiner replied: “No. It’s imminent. I’m pretty busy at the moment… I’m a slow thinker! We wanted to make sure that we take the right decision.”

Mercedes is no stranger to the Schumacher family – for his final three years in F1, Mick Schumacher’s father Michael competed for the team, prior to its dominant stretch in the turbo-hybrid era.
