A static model of the 2011 McLaren MP4-26 Formula 1 car is currently up for auction and while inoperative it is a very cool display item.

The full-size show car was commissioned by McLaren for various promotional activities during the 2011 season. The Collecting Cars listing states that it is “almost indistinguishable” from the real car and comes complete with its contemporary Vodafone paintwork along with Lewis Hamilton’s name on the engine mount.

The car contains many of the original parts that were used in Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button’s racing cars. For example, it stands on real Enkei bikes with Pirelli P Zero Compound 3 tires from the 2011 season. It also has a carbon fiber monocoque and a replica steering wheel complete with shift lights and the same switchgear as the original item, as well as a Schroth racing harness.

McLaren’s MP4-26 F1 car was very successful for the British team, although it failed to secure either the constructors ‘or drivers’ championships in 2011. With Hamilton and Button at the wheel, the MP4-26 took six wins, 18 podiums and one pole position.

Included with sale is a framed Certificate of Authenticity signed by Zak Brown. The listing indicates that the car has some minor scratches, including the red covers for the central locking of the wheels.

What could the winner use the car for? Now that it doesn’t have a powertrain, it can only be used as a display item and would certainly look pretty cool in an expensive living room. A brave soul can even try to hang it on a wall, as we’ve seen some collectors do.
