10 Facts About The McLaren 765LT That Every Enthusiast Should Know

McLaren 765LT

McLaren has always been a pioneer of supercars, and it has outdone itself with the 2022 McLaren 765LT. Based on one of McLaren’s most iconic cars, the 720S, the 765LT hits the road lower, more comprehensive, and lighter than the former. Not only that, but this car can hit a maximum speed of 205 mph. Now that’s impressive. A re-engineered 755-horsepower 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 sits inside this master craft of automotive engineering. The front has been moved further forward, which allows for more efficient aerodynamics. The rear wing has also been made about 20-percent larger than the 720S, which is what gives this car its “longtail” look. A quote from inside a McLaren brochure on this car reads: “The 765LT exudes menace”, and McLaren was right on the money with that statement. One look at this car, and you can just tell it is powerful, fast, and a supercar lover’s dream.

When looking at this car, it can definitely be seen as a work of art. It is in McLaren’s eyes. And, look no further for the magnum opus of this car than to its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. This free-revving engine has 755 Hp and generates an astounding 590 pound-feet of torque. The 2022 McLaren 765LT’s engine makes 45 horses more than the 720S. Also, because of the ultra-lightweight nature of the 765LT, it can fully utilize all the power coming from its engine. Coupled with twin-scroll turbochargers and an electronically-controlled wastegate, this car will give anyone the driving experience of a lifetime.

9/10 The McLaren 765LT Sprints 0-62mph In 2.8 Seconds

First off, let’s talk speed. This car is incredibly fast, sprinting from 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds. That is quick. Like, your head hitting the back of your headrest and not being able to fight the G-forces “quick”. If you wanted to hit 124 mph, it would only take you about 4.2 seconds. That is all thanks to the painstaking engineering that McLaren did in order to make this car faster than ever. But just what did they do to achieve these speeds? McLaren made changes to the structure of the 765LT from the 720S to make it weigh less and be more aerodynamic than its predecessor. It seems like McLaren obsessed over how light this car could be, which gave it the ability to hit speeds upwards of 200+ mph. Let’s get into some finer details about what makes this car so light.

Two words – carbon fiber. McLaren really likes using carbon fiber in its cars, and why wouldn’t it? Carbon fiber is one of the lightest and most durable materials in the world. When synthesized correctly, it can be up to 10 times stronger than steel. So it’s no wonder that McLaren makes all of their car chassis out of this material. And the 765LT is no exception. Most, if not all the body panels of this car are made of carbon fiber. This radically reduces the weight of the 2022 McLaren 765LT compared to other supercars. Even the 765LT’s rear wing is about 35 percent lighter than the 720S. The quad-exit exhaust is made of titanium, which gives it more weight reduction as opposed to its all-steel counterparts. The 10-spoked forged alloy wheels with titanium bolts in combination with uniquely designed Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires come in at about 48 pounds lighter than the 720S. We weren’t kidding when we say that McLaren obsessed over the weight of this car.

7/10 The McLaren 765LT is extremely aerodynamic

One look at this car, and you can tell that it just cuts through any sort of wind resistance thrown at it. This comes from a lot of changes McLaren made to the body of the 765LT. For starters, the 720S had a front splitter that is 5 millimeters higher than the 765LT. Putting the front splitter slightly closer to the ground gives the 765LT better downforce. Combine this with the aforementioned carbon fiber changes to most of the 765LT, and you get a car that would cut through a hurricane. McLaren had already been making their cars extremely aerodynamic before the 765LT came on the market, but it’s the 765LT that is one of the most aerodynamic cars McLaren has produced. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine that this car is street legal.

6/10 Three Drive Models On The 765LT Modes

McLaren wanted the driver of the 765LT to feel more connected to the road and to feel the driving experience as much as possible. Because of this, the car comes in three modes. Comfort mode is meant for you to have the smoothest drive possible in this car. You will feel the bumps in the road, but they won’t cut through to your body. On the other hand, the sport and track modes take away comfort in exchange for better performance. So while comfort mode will leave you a sense of “wow that was fun” feeling, the sport and track modes can be a little rough on the body, and make you feel like you’re walking on rocks with bare feet. It’s recommended to only use sport and track modes if you’re at the track.

5/10 The 765LT’s Braking System Is Inspired By F1 Cars

McLaren 765LTMcLaren

A side shot of the brakes of a McLaren 765LT

McLaren took inspiration from F1 cars when it was designing the brake system of the 765LT. The brake pads are cooled by caliper cooling ducts that were inspired by McLaren’s F1 counterparts. The cooling ducts can make the brakes about 50 degrees cooler when it’s on the track, giving you exceptional handling and braking that would make an F1 driver smile. A lot of the braking system was taken from another of McLaren’s supercars, the Senna, but if you wanted the full Senna brake setup on your 765LT, it would cost you about $18,000. The braking is great for track use, but it feels a little ridiculous for street use. But just using this car on the street is kind of ridiculous in itself.

4/10 The 765LT Is Not Feature-Rich

An inside shot of a McLaren 765LT’s cabin

Since this car was designed with being lightweight in mind, there are many aspects of this car that had to be modified in order to keep it lightweight. One of these places is the interior. Obviously, when buying a car of this caliber you will get luxury. The cabin is customizable with multiple color combinations, as well as soft-grain leather and faux-suede upholstery options. But the refinement of the interior has been reduced in order to make the car weigh less. Lightweight seats, thinner gauges, removed soundproofing, and removed carpeting all take away weight from the car. There isn’t even a stereo or air conditioning. There is still plenty of passenger space, just as there was in the 720s, but cargo space is nonexistent because that would have just made the car heavier.

3/10 The 765LT Is Not The Most Comfortable Car, Either

McLaren 765LTMcLaren

But why would it be? It wasn’t designed for comfort. It was designed for brute force and power. Sure you could drive it at the track and get your burst of adrenaline, or you could take it up some sidewinders and switchbacks, but it won’t be the most comfortable ride. It will definitely be rewarding though. Any hint of discomfort can be whisked away with one foot on the gas pedal. You might be feeling some discomfort from the lack of cushion in the seats, but after it hugs a corner at 100+ mph I doubt you’ll be wondering how your body feels. You’ll most likely be reeling from the adrenaline rush you got from driving it down the street. All in all, the 765LT is a modern masterpiece of supercar engineering with plenty of features and power to keep you occupied for years to come.

There are two versions that the 765LT comes in. The coupe has a rounded, non-retractable hard top that follows the downward curve of the front end to give great aerodynamics, while the Spider has a retractable carbon fiber hard top that can be retracted by a single button press. The hardtop convertible only takes about 11 seconds to retract and can be retracted at up to speeds of 31 mph. But what makes these cars so cool is that they are only produced in very limited quantities. Both versions of this car will only have 765 each produced, making them a hot commodity on the supercar market. If you were looking to get either of these cars, they will set you back a pretty big chunk of change.

1/10 The McLaren 765LT Starts At Around $400,000!

Let’s face it. These aren’t your everyday cars. The 765LT is meant to be put to the test, and it’s meant to be driven like the beast that it is. This car wants to be driven fast. In fact, with the sound the exhaust makes when accelerating, it’s practically begging for it. But with any car this awesome it’s going to come with a hefty price tag. The base model starts at a cool $382,500 and the price increases as you add more features to the car. These features would be things like custom color designs, upholstery selection, driver safety features, and many more. Unfortunately though, since there were only 765 of each version made, they are already sold out.
