Pourchaire set for F1 test debut with Alfa Romeo

Vasseur: Mistake to push Pourchaire to F1 too early

The Formula 2 driver, a member of the Alfa Romeo-affiliated Sauber Academy, will support the team on Wednesday for a race in a C38 of the specification 2019 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Pourchaire will share the track with Ferrari and McLaren, all of whom are taking part in a 2022 Pirelli 18-inch tire test.

This is the 17-year-old’s first experience with F1 machines and the latest milestone in the Frenchman’s meteoric rise in the junior single-seater rankings.

Pourchaire caused a stir this season in his rookie F2 season by becoming the championship’s youngest polesitter and race winner after a stunning debut in Monaco in May.

However, the F1 test comes after a hectic period for the ART Grand Prix driver recovering from a broken arm that was sustained in an accident on the first lap of an F2 race in Baku in June .

Pourchaire, who is sixth in the F2 classification, was able to compete successfully against time and prove his fitness to compete in the British Grand Prix of the F2 championship last month.

While the teenager has his sights set on reaching Formula 1, he told Autosport in May that he was “really far” from his dream and that he still had “a lot to learn”.

Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur has been keeping a close eye on the progress of his young driver, but admitted in June that it would be wrong to push Pourchaire Info F1 “too early”.

“We have a contract with Theo, but I don’t want to be in a rush with Theo, we have to remember that he is 17,” said Vasseur in June.

“He has to do the job in F2 first, then we’ll have time to discuss it later.

“I was impressed by Theo [this year] but I was also impressed by Theo last year.

“It’s a little early for next year as he’s only done three races in Formula 2 and if you remember the guys have been champions in the past or have good results in the first year and the last part of the season.

“He’s more than young, he’s 17 and he’s still chasing the driver’s license and we have to give him time to do the job. We’re in no hurry, but I think he’s a very good one [driver]. “

Pourchaire will be the newest F2 driver to experience F1 machines for the first time after Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson reached a similar milestone last month with a run in Sebastian Vettel’s 2011 Red Bull RB7 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
